Which is not to say that the story is not interesting, but that zie would not engage with it because of the ease of reading (this is a reflection on the kid in question, rather than the story). "The girl in the cave" is aimed at a much younger audience than previous of Eaton's books that I've encountered - it might be a challenge for my nearly-8-yr-old, but I suspect that the 11-yr-old would tear through it and demand something more interesting. I know, I know-all baby animals are cute. Piglets are among the cutest of all baby animals. The best I can tell you about male turkeys is that they’re made of meat, so after the fun of making them gobble when you make a loud noise or watching them puff up and strut to impress the ladies, you can-when the fun and games turn to terror and tears-eat them. Then we had male turkeys, and inevitably every male turkey we ever owned reached a point where they began to attack us. She was like a feathered puppy-the absolute best. She would follow us on chores, ask to be pet, and even let kids pick her up and hold her on tours. We had a female turkey who successfully raised her own 10-poult hatch, and after they were raised and gone, she remained a loyal pet. We have never successfully raised an entire order of poults without some deaths-and that isn’t fun-but once they get bigger, they’re a hoot. You have to always stay a few steps ahead of their pea brains to avoid them getting into trouble. You can’t leave open water for them to drink, or they could lean forward when they’re done, fall in and drown. If you have chickens around, they can usually do the job, but I have-more than once-spent time showing poults how to peck by stabbing bits of feed with a pencil. Baby turkeys being raised without their mom often need to be taught how to eat. Turkeys have a reputation for being dumb, and I shall do nothing to dispel the rumor. And baby turkeys purchased mail order or at a feed store often are not fun either. Female turkeys are fun male turkeys, particularly after they reach sexual maturity, are absolutely not. The very best part of my job is just hanging out with our herd, watching them be goats and giving in to their demands to be pet and loved. They thrive on routine, love treats and head scratches, enjoy snuggling with their friends, and want to eat whatever you’re eating. In all other respects, they are like big dogs. In this respect, they are like big, vastly more social cats. They know their names, but only periodically answer to them. Goats are incredibly intelligent, yet not particularly inclined to do things to please you. As they get older and more sedentary, that behavior is thankfully somewhat curbed, but still, don’t ever park your car in their space-ask how I know. Babies will jump on anything and everything, including other goats, dogs, people, housing, tires, file cabinets-whatever you purposely or mistakenly leave lying around. But you don’t have to be a professional to enjoy the ridiculousness of goats of all ages.įrom about 3 days old, goats are the clowns of the barnyard. I’m a goat farmer, so of course I am going to say goats. If you’re looking to add a new one to your menagerie, perhaps you’ll consider keeping them, as well. Here are five animals we’ve had a blast keeping on our farm. Although animals can offer your farm sustenance in the form of meat or milk, as well as various services, including guardianship, waste removal and manure, finding farm animals that bring a smile to your face will make their extra care and upkeep worth it. The fun thing about keeping a small farm-particularly if you aren’t out to start a farm business-is that you can keep a variety of animals for the mere pleasure of having them around. He now spends his days panning around Lapland’s primordial bronze fields in search of the motherlode that might buy him a better life, and the bombers that fly overhead show him the same apathy that a drifting rain cloud might show to a rock. A grizzled old veteran who retired from the Nazi-stabbing business after the bloodshed followed him home (the character’s backstory is so basic that “Sisu” hardly bothers to fill it in), Aatami has lost interest in the war by the time the film begins. But that’s only because they force his hand. Then again, stabbing Nazis in the head might be the closest thing this planet has to a universal language.Īnd let’s be clear, the aforementioned man - a bearded gold prospector named Aatami Korpi, played by Jorma Tommila in a performance that feels like a cross between Daniel Plainview and John Wick, complete with an adorable canine companion - stabs an absolute scheiße-ton of Nazis. Like most of the words spoken in Helander’s unapologetic bid for international attention, this voiceover is delivered in deeply accented English while the barrier of subtitles may only be one inch tall, scaling it would force American audiences to put in more work than any other part of this film requires of them. “Deep within the wilderness of Lapland,” the narrator intones, “there is a man who has decided to leave the war behind him, for good.” Then - in a bit of brute-force storytelling so blunt that it lends this silly movie a vaguely mythic veneer - Helander busts out some trailer-ready voiceover to set his story in motion. First, Helander’s film kicks off with a definition of its untranslatable title (“Sisu” is a local term for the sort of impossible courage and determination that a person is able to summon when all hope is lost), and some maps to establish proper context for its setting (the year is 1944 and the Nazis are being forced out of Finland, but they’re wreaking as much havoc as they possibly can as they slouch to the border). “Sisu” wastes no time setting proper expectations for the smooth-brained thrill ride to come. ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ Review: Time Is of the Essence in a Sequel That Gets Old Fast Jackson vehicle “Big Game”), but “some killer, some filler” is enough to get the job done when that job is liquifying Nazis into geysers of thick CGI blood. “All killer, no filler” would be a wildly generous way of describing Helander’s latest bid for an international breakout (previous efforts include the fun Christmas chiller “Rare Exports” and the “fun” Samuel L. Straightforward and unpretentious to the point that its hero doesn’t isn’t even afforded dialogue - let alone a meaningful character arc - this is the kind of movie that starts with a tank fighting a gold miner before escalating to “Dr. If you think that sounds like a decent trade-off for 91 minutes’ worth of brainless midnight fun, then I’ve got some good news for you: “Sisu” does exactly what it says on the tin. A “they pissed off the wrong guy” movie so pure and simple that its sub-genre almost doubles as a plot synopsis, Jalmari Helander’s “ Sisu” is basically what might happen if someone transplanted “Fury Road” into Finland, lost 90 percent of what made that film into an unrepeatable force of nature, and tried to make up the difference by exploding as many Nazis as possible in outrageously violent fashion. I've been curious about Mellel for some time, and I'm a longtime user of MS Word. I use Antidote daily across a variety of programs. If I haven't mentioned this before, Mellel is now compatible with Antidote, which is a much less expensive alternative to Grammarly. What Mellel calls outline view is really a view of all of the many structural elements in your document: not just headings and subheadings, but also charts, equations, figures, pictures, tables. 1, and I remember reading early on that the Redlers wanted to rethink the word processor from the ground up, not necessarily giving into conventions of what had been done before. If it merely duplicated Word, what would be the point? I have been using it off and on since v. I agree that Mellel is easier to use than it used to be, but it admittedly has a learning curve for the uninitiated. The creator of Bookends told me he's never seen such interconnectivity between software as there is between Mellel and Bookends. I think if you've got Mellel + Bookends, you've got everything Nota Bene offers in a much better interface without legacy code going back to the 80s. I still have MS Word but mainly just use it to open documents sent to me in emails-not that Mellel couldn't do that, too. Even if I'm making a few quick notes, I usually turn to Mellel. Mellel has also become my primary word processor over the years. Scrivener for larger papers I need to plan out, Ulysses for smaller papers, blog posts, etc.Ī few thoughts to the recent comments above. I still use Scrivener and Ulysses in my toolbox as well. I have never upgraded my Mellel because my original reason for purchasing your program was to have an uncluttered word processor. They’re just not up-to-par with what I need. My copy of Mellel is: Version 2.1.1 (build 3) I recently upgraded my Mac to Snow Leopard - Version 10.6.2. I tried NeoOffice and LibreOffice in the past but dropped them. I started using it during my brief time on Windows, and I’m already too pulled into their ecosystem to change to something else for academic writings. I’m still using Nota Bene for my academic word processor. I got so used to only using Pages for that back in the early days that I never have adapted to it as a full-fledged word processor. I keep Pages around primarily for page layout stuff (when I need a “nice looking” document). I’ll keep NWP around for working with RTF docs. Fixed an issue that would cause Mellel to reject a user name when activating Mellel if the user name is copied along with a terminating CR or LF Fixed an issue that caused 'diamond' styles to appear in the paragraph and character style lists following working with edit Auto-title flows sheet or even switching between apps. I’ll probably promote Mellel into that position, especially due to the iPad syncing feature. I was using Nisus Writer Pro as my “everyday” word processor. Otherwise, I try to avoid Word as much as possible. I keep a perpertual-license copy of Word around (although I believe my work offers me the Microsoft 365 version free now) just to check compatibility with other Word users before sending them a doc. It can fit pseudo-Voigt functions, but it is quite cack-handed to use. I have been keeping an eye on the thread, but I've not a lot to report at the moment.įityk looks pretty usual with some very nice tools, but is unsuited to the stuff that I'm doing. Thank you to all who have replied since my last message. You might want to check with all the CCP projects there are like 12 or 13 of them :) I know the Collaborative Computational Project CCP had one on xps peak fitting and one of them was for linux. However it's written in VB.so may be difficult to port to Linux? I hope I will add other features into the program in the near future. I also hope that the new features in this program can be adopted by the XPS manufacturers in the later versions of their software. I hope this program will be useful for people without modern XPS software. You may ask for the source program if you really want to. This version of the program was written in Visual Basic 6.0 and uses 32 bit processes. Guys good at programming could request the source code: Just found out that XPSpeak is a freeware, :)Īnd I have to stick with this program coz my collegues share the fitted data with XPSpeak. Does anyone have any suggestions how to do that? I was thinking about writing something in Scilab, but if anyone has any programme that can do that for me, I'd be hugely appreciative. In order to do this I will need to convolve the calculated data with Gaussians and Lorentzians. The other problem I have with XPS data is I'm going to be using some theoretical calculations (some of my own, some in collaboration with Cambridge university) of the valence band electron density-of-states to compare with experimental XPS data. getting an open source programme to do these bits would mean I can do everything in Ubuntu. I've yet to find anything similar in Linux, and am hoping that someone on here might know of something I could use? (XPSpeak is the only Windows programme that I *need* to use. There's a programme for Windows called XPSpeak which allows me to fit semi-Voigt functions (convolved Gaussian-Lorentzian lineshapes) to experimental spectra, as well as doing background subtractions. I'm a condensed matter research physicist and use x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) a fair amount. This is a bit of a long shot, but what the hell. If you don’t want braces, talk to your doctor about cosmetic procedures to fill gaps between your teeth. Invisible or removable braces may also fix some cases of diastema. Braces have wires and brackets that put pressure on teeth and slowly move them together, which closes a gap. For some people, a diastema is nothing more than a cosmetic issue and it doesn’t indicate a problem like gum disease.īraces are a common treatment for diastema. Treatment for a diastema may or may not be necessary depending on the underlying cause. Signs of gum disease include red and swollen gums, bone loss, loose teeth, and bleeding gums. This can lead to tooth loss and gaps between teeth. In this case, inflammation damages the gums and tissue supporting the teeth. This may seem like a harmless reflex, but too much pressure on the front teeth can cause a separation.ĭiastemas can also develop from gum disease, which is a type of infection. Dentists refer to this as a tongue thrust. Rather than the tongue positioning itself at the roof of the mouth while swallowing, the tongue may push against the front teeth. In older children and adults, diastema can develop from incorrect swallowing reflexes. Children who suck their thumb may form a gap because the sucking motion puts pressure on the front teeth, causing them to pull forward. This overgrowth causes a separation between these teeth, resulting in a gap.Ĭertain bad habits may also trigger a gap between the teeth. You may also develop diastema if there’s an overgrowth of the tissue that borders your gum line and your two upper front teeth. The size of your teeth and jaw bone can be determined by genetics, so diastema can run in families. As a result, teeth are spaced too far apart. Gaps may form when a person’s teeth are too small for the jaw bone. In some people, this condition is related to the size of their teeth and the size of their jaw bone. You can configure the system charts repository either from the Rancher UI or from Rancher's API view. There isn’t one single cause of diastema, but rather several possible contributing factors. Rancher needs to be configured to use your Git mirror of the system-charts repository. Refer to the release notes in the system-charts repository to see which branch corresponds to your version of Rancher. To be able to use these features in an air gap install, you will need to mirror the system-charts repository to a location in your network that Rancher can reach and configure Rancher to use that repository. The System Charts repository contains all the catalog items required for features such as monitoring, logging, alerting and global DNS. Setting Up System Charts for Rancher Before v2.3.0 A. To be able to use these features in an air gap install, you will need to run the Rancher install command with an extra environment variable, CATTLE_SYSTEM_CATALOG=bundled, which tells Rancher to use the local copy of the charts instead of attempting to fetch them from GitHub.Įxample commands for a Rancher installation with a bundled system-charts are included in the air gap Docker installation instructions and the air gap Kubernetes installation instructions.
